Maus I: A Survivor’s Tale – My Father Bleeds History by Art Spiegelman is a groundbreaking graphic novel that tells the powerful true story of the author’s father, Vladek Spiegelman, a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust. Through a unique blend of memoir, biography, and historical narrative, the book follows Vladek’s harrowing experiences in Nazi-occupied Poland, his resourcefulness and endurance, and the unimaginable horrors he faced.Parallel to this historical account, the story also explores the strained relationship between Art and his aging father in the present day, revealing how the trauma of the Holocaust continues to affect survivors and their families long after the war ends. Using anthropomorphic characters—Jews as mice, Nazis as cats—Spiegelman creates a striking visual metaphor that deepens the emotional impact of the narrative.Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Maus is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential graphic novels ever written. It is not only a story of survival, but also a profound exploration of memory, identity, guilt, and the lasting legacy of trauma.
